Things to Do in Laramie, WY in the Winter

September 5, 2021

When considering buying ranch property in Wyoming, something that may cross your mind is the winter months. The state certainly has its share of cold weather and not everyone is accustomed to “real” winters.

Great news for those in and around Laramie is that, compared to some northern states, winters are fairly mild. You can certainly expect some snow and freezing temperatures, but you can also anticipate a good deal of sunshine.

So, while you’ll want to dress for the cold, you don’t have to be confined indoors. Let’s explore some wintertime fun you might enjoy around your Wyoming ranchland.

SKIING

A favorite winter sport for many, you’ll have plenty of opportunities for skiing near Laramie, whether you’re a fan of alpine skiing or if cross-country’s more your style.

Snowy Range Ski Area is just 35 miles away and they’ve got both groomed and ungroomed trails for skiers of all abilities.

There are plenty of groomed cross-country trails, too, and for those who are feeling a bit more adventurous (and who have the experience), the Snowy Range provides plenty of open space for off-trail escapades, too.

SNOWMOBILING

If you like your snowy adventures with a bit more power, snowmobiling is for you. Fire up your machine for a ride around your own Wyoming acreage, or again head to the hills of the Snowy Range. Don’t worry if you don’t own a snowmobile yourself—guided tours and independent rentals are both available.

HORSEBACK RIDING IN THE SNOW

Many of the landowners here at Wild Horse Ranch keep horses on their property, and if you’ll be among them, you don’t have to hang up the saddle in the colder months. You should exercise a few precautions, like avoiding ice or very deep snow, but horses and their human companions alike can still enjoy a good ride when the mercury drops and the flakes fall.

ICE FISHING

Popular among many anglers in the winter, ice fishing is a great way to get out and enjoy the cold. Crystal Lake and Granite Springs Reservoirs are both about 40-50 minutes’ drive from Laramie and offer great fishing for perch and trout.
